What is God`s Will?
There are many questions surrounding God`s Will. Being from the South, I grew up hearing many people use the phrase, Lord willin` and the creek don’t rise. Many people say “God Willing” or “The Lord`s Will” without really understanding what it actually means. Some wonder, “What is God`s will for my life?” Although they may have good intentions surrounding the question, this is the wrong way to phrase the question. Rather, as believers, we should be asking: “What is God`s Will, and how do I fit into His plan?” God and His plan should always be the focus of our personal dreams and plans. How do you know what the Will of God is? God hasn’t hidden His will from us. The reality of it is that He has clearly revealed it to us.
God created me and had a plan for me before I was born. He knit me together in my mother`s womb and knows me better than I know myself (Psalm 139:13-14; Jer. 1:5). Of course He has a will for my life. If I want to know what God`s Will is… I begin with His word, and He will build my desires around His desires and His heart. The whole Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, reveals God`s perfect plan of redemption.
It`s God`s Will For Us To Know Him
First, it is God`s Will that no one perishes (2 Peter 3:9; Ephesians 2:4). God gave His only son to pay a sin debt that we could never pay. He desires a relationship with us enough to let His precious son take the punishment we rightly deserved (John 3:16) so that we could spend an eternity with Him. Even though I fail Him again and again, He still pursues me because He loves me unconditionally (1 John 4:8-10; Ephesians 1:4-5; Romans 5:6-8; John 1:14; John 15:13).
It`s God`s Will For Us to Walk With Him
Secondly, it is God`s Will that we know God`s word and follow Him. God wants us to understand who we are, as His children, because of what Christ has done on our behalf. Believers were bought by the blood of Christ and now we have access to a relationship with the living God because of that. Our response to God`s kindness should be a changed life, as we learn to think like Him and walk with Him. How can we know what God`s will is for our life if we don’t know Him and His heart first? He has given us His word as a guide for our lives. God`s will is that we walk in the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18; Ephesians 5:18; Colossians 3:16). The more we know about Him and His word, the more we can know how to better serve Him with our lives because He has given us different gifts and talents that we can use to serve Him.
In Romans chapter twelve, Paul is talking to a group of believers concerning their walk with the Lord. We should present ourselves to God to be used by Him (James 3; Romans 6:12-13). Romans 12:1-2 says, “I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your Spiritual Worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” These sacrifices are worshipful responses to God as an expression of gratitude towards Him for His kindness, not because we think we can pay God back for what He has given. I serve God because I want to worship Him, not because I am afraid of Him(1 John 4:18). It`s ultimately up to Him where He wants to take me, but I follow Him day by day because I love Him and He gives me the desire of my heart as He directs my path (Proverbs 3:6).
“Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).
